In this programme, The Cappella Singers present a Passiontide
selection of sacred gems from the 17th and 18th
centuries.
There are motets by Claudio Monteverdi (Adoramus
te, Christe) and Carlo Gesualdo*(O vos omnes); two beautiful
plainsong melodies associated with Holy Week; and works by Gregorio Allegri: a
little known setting of verses from The Lamentations of Jeremiah and
his very well known, - indeed legendary - setting of Miserere mei, Deus.
The organist is Robert Dixon, Organ Scholar at
Gloucester Cathedral, who will be taking up a similar post in October at Jesus
College, Cambridge. He will be playing solos by Girolamo Frescobaldi, who lived
in Rome at the same time as Allegri.
The concert begins and ends with
Crucifixus - Antonio Lotti's setting in eight parts
and Antonio Caldara's in sixteen.
